PB in Schools: US schools to decide on covid relief funds using PB

A Rhode Island school district us set to use participatory budgeting (PB) to decided how to spend $100,000 of federal covid-19 relief funds.

50 parents and students will form a steering group to discuss ideas around helping the district decide how to move forward after the pandemic. From there, voting machines will be placed in schools to allow students to vote and have their say.

“This is a very innovative approach to teaching civics," Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea said.

"What it does is, at a very early age, it helps kids understand the power of their vote, especially at the local level," Gorbea said.
