The Power of Youth – Young People Setting Local Priorities

Bids are being invited for a share of £70,000 that is being made available for Youth Work Projects across Angus.

The funding is being made available through a partnership between Angus Council and Angus Alcohol and Drugs Partnership as part of a commitment to *participatory budgeting.

It follows a hugely successful Power of Youth process last year when 34 projects vied for £40,000. More than 1100 young people voted for their preferred project and 15 projects were awarded funding.

This year, £70,000 will be shared across the county, with £10,000 for Angus-wide projects; £10,000 for each of the four locality areas – Arbroath/Brechin and Montrose/Carnoustie, Monifieth and Sidlaw/Forfar and Kirriemuir; and £20,000 across Angus for projects that support a range of approaches to alcohol and drug education.

Applications are welcomed from any youth work providers, learning providers and youth groups in Angus.

Bids should be for a minimum of £1000 and a maximum of £3000 and must be received by no later than 5pm on Thursday 22 August 2019. More than one project bid per group/organisation can be submitted, but each individual bid should be made on a separate form. Bids don’t need to match a specific theme, but do need to demonstrate they will contribute to Youthlink Scotland’s National Work Outcomes or that they will reduce the use of alcohol and drugs by young people.

Reducing use of alcohol and drugs by young people can include projects that provide activities that prevent or reduce early initiation of substance use; develop social, personal and resistance skills; provide a range of learning approaches to alcohol and drug education.

They should also be underpinned by principles of reflecting local priorities; the voluntary participation of young people; and involving young people in the design of learning and activities.

The Power of Youth comes into full effect when young people decide on the projects proposed in their area.

Young people from S1 to 18 years-old can vote and voting goes live from 2 September to 30 September and will be done via the Young Scot website. The Funding goes to those with the most votes, while unsuccessful bidders can receive further support from a Communities Officer if they want to press on with their project.
